GOAT (jp) + Church Andrews & Matt Davies
Institute of Contemporary Arts

Following back-to-back sold out shows at London Jazz Festival in 2023, we are delighted to welcome GOAT to the ICA.

Hailing from Osaka, Japan, GOAT challenge the typical rock-band set up with their unique, intricate approach to minimalism, prioritizing pure percussive sound over melodic content. They build compositions that explore rhythms and bringing audiences into trance like fatigue. Utilizing harmonics outside standard tonality along with clever muting, GOAT craft complex, driven, forceful compositions which are both urban and tribal at the same time. Their percussion, for example, comprising of bass drum, snare and hi-hat with a muted bass for every string to hit with a punch.

"Perhaps the tightest band in existence right now... we ain’t talking about the Swedish psych troupe, nor the Greek metal act; but the infinitely superior Japanese GOAT (jp) who take the micro-precision of computer music and play it on instruments" Boomkat

With support from Church Andrews & Matt Davies.

Church Andrews & Matt Davies showcase a mutually informed conversation between live electronics and analogue percussion, in which Andrews’s synth sounds and Davies’s drum performances act in response to one another, the results are a series of sonic organisms – semi-mechanical ecosystems that click and whirr with subtle, shifting focuses.

Their 2024 release, YUCCA, is a testament to their minimalist ethos, utilising solely acoustic drums and a single digital synth. The EP represents their most stripped-down music to date. The sleek arrangements and minimalistic aesthetic showcase the duo's unique style while drawing on influences such as the fibonacci sequence, carnatic rhythms, and dissonance.
