Filmmaker Basim Magdy is simultaneously interested and dismissive of the meanings concealed within the world; as he layers interpretations, he increasingly questions their authenticity. His work doesn't concern itself with a fixed contemporary reality which he views as a masked parade of absurdity. In his eyes, there is no sense or logic in the world—time, memory, future, and dreams all blur together, dissolving into a hazy in-between.
Magdy actively seeks solace in the tangibility of nature, the patterns of the waves, the shapes of leaves, the sound of rain. It is through these natural patterns that he glimpses fragments of truth, grounding his stories in moments of clarity amidst chaos.
The collection of films explore the fragility of human understanding and the illusion of control over time, truth, and reality.
Born in Assiut, Egypt in 1977, Basim Magdy lives and works in Basel and Cairo. Magdy works with different media including drawing, painting, animation, installation, sculpture, video and sound. He is particularly interested in exploring the space between fiction and reality in representation of power in the media and global culture.
