Madeline’s Madeline, dir. Josephine Decker, USA 2018, English, 94 min., 15

Sixteen-year-old Madeline joins a New York City physical theatre troupe. When the ambitious director pushes the teenager to weave her rich interior world and troubled history with her mother into their collective art, the lines between performance and reality begin to blur.

Shirley director Josephine Decker discovered leading actress Helena Howard while judging a teen arts festival in 2014. Howard’s performance moved her to tears, after which she asked if they could work on a film together.

This screening will be following by a workshop in the ICA Studio with an emphasis on performing with body and movement, run by actor Luyanda Unati Lewis-Nyawo.
