Opening Night + introduction
Institute of Contemporary Arts
A blonde actress wearing a funeral veil applies bright pink lipstick
Opening Night, dir. John Cassavetes, USA 1977, English, 144 min., 15.

A death and a play. In the days leading up to opening night, an alcoholic actress is confronted with the realities of ageing while processing the death of an unknown young fan. Gena Rowland stars navigating legacy and fame in one of her finest on screen performances.

John Cassavetes’ haunting drama investigates the nuances of performance in our everyday lives alongside our art. Opening Night’s lasting legacy cements it as one of the best American films on theatre ever made.

The screening will be introduced by season curator Sam Smith.
