Our Body 아워 바디
Institute of Contemporary Arts
Two Korean women in running gear stand on the bridge, talking as the sun sets to orange and pink
Our Body (아워 바디), dir. Han Ka-ram, South Korea 2018, 95 min., 15

Ja-young (Choi Hee-seo) has been preparing for her administrative examination for 8 years, and she is exhausted in both body and mind. One evening, she encounters a beautiful woman named Hyun-joo (Ahn Ji-hye), and following her example, Ja-young takes up running and starts to rediscover her own vitality. However, when Hyun-joo is in a sudden accident, Ja-young finds her purpose shaken once again.

Our Body is a film that uses running not as a means to express a theme, but as a lens through which to focus on the body itself and on the realities faced by young women in Korean society. With its perspective on both ‘body’ and ‘running’, the film showcases the ways in which one’s own body is sometimes the only thing that can be controlled under otherwise stifling circumstances.
