"By the Bluest of Seas displays a poetry of gestural invention that brings cinema back to its origins of live performance: circus, acrobatics, vaudeville, gymnastics" – Nicole Brenez
"Eisenstein apart...Barnet must be considered the best Soviet filmmaker." - Jacques Rivette
A storm on the Caspian Sea lands two friends, sailor Yusuf and mechanic Alyosha, on the shores of Soviet Azerbaijan where they arrive at a kolkhoz (a Soviet “collective farm”). One of the administrators of the kolkhoz is the beautiful Masha who they both fall in love with. Their rivalry for her affections affects their work and threatens the community.
One of the great works by the often overlooked Soviet filmmaker Boris Barnet, By the Bluest of Seas is a euphoric tale of love and friendship filled with lyrical imagery and bursting forth with desire, laughter and music.
The screening will be on 35mm and preceded by an introduction by Angela Schanelec.
