Pure Blood
Institute of Contemporary Arts
Pure Blood (Pura sangre), dir. Luis Ospina, Colombia 1982, 105 min.,  Spanish with English subtitles

‘Unlike The Conversation and I Walked With a Zombie, my choice of Pure Blood by Luis Ospina originated from a different impulse. Luis was an iconic Colombian filmmaker whom I met in 2017 at the start of my research for Memoria. His personality and – from what I had read – his wild filmography motivated me to regard this new country as a second home with like-minded comrades. At the former Bogotá Cinemateca, Luis handed me DVD copies of his works, Pure Blood included. To this day, due to my insistence on experiencing films in theatres, I still haven’t watched it. Its inclusion here is out of pure gratitude and curiosity – and it has added another layer of mystery.’

An old man turns to terror as he looks to source the blood transfusions he needs to survive in Luis Ospina’s seminal Colombia thriller, 40 years old this year – and exclusively selected for this 3+3 season by director Apichatpong Weerasethakul as a companion piece to his new film Memoria , screening this week at the ICA.
