Join us for the first Members' Reading Group as we dive into Practicing Dying, the debut book and literary anti-memoir by Charlotte Northall.

Published by the independent imprint Pilot Press, Practicing Dying is an anarchic, provocative, and tenderly self-deprecating memoir that disrupts dominant narratives around mental health and addiction, while proposing an alternative approach to treating the “sickness of self” that afflicts our modern condition.

Occuring on a semi-regular basis, the Reading Group meets to discuss an individual text: a new release featured in our book launch series, an exciting title from our world-class shop, or a work that directly responds to an event from our programme.

The Reading Group is an ongoing, non-consecutive series, giving Members the freedom to sign up for individual sessions that appeal to them. The Reading Group is free of charge to all ICA Members.

Find out more about how you can become a Member and sign up for the Readng Group on our Membership page.
Bios
Charlotte Northall
is a writer based in London. Her debut book, Practicing Dying (Pilot Press, 2025), weaves autobiography with cultural criticism to examine addiction, capitalism and spiritual practice. Alongside her writing, she works with rough sleepers, supporting people living with addiction and complex mental health needs.

Pilot Press is the imprint of artist Richard Porter. Started in 2017, the press publishes a wide variety of queer, experimental and risk-taking works of literature – inspired by the collaborative, intersectional spirit of the gay liberation movement and the radical, subversive history of artist's DIY publishing.
