'We write history ourselves'

Theo Angelopoulos returns to the procedural form (albeit with a decidedly more poetic even surrealist tint), as the discovery of a rebel soldiers corpse, by a bourgeois hunting party, sparks a reckoning with personal and collective pasts.

Where The Travelling Players traced an elliptical voyage through history, The Hunters is more akin to a ceaseless spiral, one whose turns from past to present and back again are carefully concealed. Both an exorcism of the sins of a nation and an unconventional court drama filled with testimonies, witnesses and perpetrators, in The Hunters, history, like Arvanitis and Angelopoulos' camera, continues to turn, with revelations hidden around every corner waiting to be revealed.
