The Man Who Envied Women + Introduction
Institute of Contemporary Arts
A man stands over a woman, his hands over her shoulders. Shadows obscure both their faces. Bookcases cover the wall behind them.
The Man Who Envied Women, dir. Yvonne Rainer, USA 1985, 125 min., English

Around a familiar theme, the breakup of a marriage, Rainer constructs an honest, graceful and wickedly funny account of a self-satisfied womaniser, Jack Deller, the man ‘who almost knows too much about women’.

The Man Who Envied Women shows Rainer, in her own words, ‘throw down the gauntlet to psychoanalytic feminist film theory’, interrogating and responding to contemporary debates over notions such as the male gaze with a drolly provocative hybrid essay film.

This is the UK Premiere of the 4K restoration of the work. The screening will be preceded by an introduction by Oliver Fuke.
Oliver Fuke is an independent researcher and curator who has worked on various figures connected with experimental and political film, including Trevor Mathison, Laura Mulvey, Peter Wollen and Yvonne Rainer.
