Wavelength
Michael Snow’s landmark 1967 work established his reputation, upended ideas of what a film could be and influenced a generation of filmmakers from Akerman to Antonioni.

Presented as an unbroken 45 minute zoom across a New York loft, Wavelength flirts with narrative, even a murder mystery, while repeatedly calling attention to its own materiality. As the camera closes in on the far wall and a sine wave grows louder, Snow uses light, colour and four “human events” to create a rich sensory experience. He described the film as “a summation of my nervous system, religious inklings, and aesthetic ideas”.

So Is This
Blurring the line between reading and viewing, So Is This is Snow at his most playful and self-referential. Words appear on screen one at a time as the ‘narrator’ speaks directly to the audience. There is no soundtrack, yet the tempo, rhythm, and even size of the word-images give them a distinctive voice.

An investigation of how language and image-making act together and against one another, the film leans on humour, interactivity and the communal power of art in a way that's both complex and accessible.
