A man walks away from burning cars, two bodies are in the road
Weekend, dir. Jean-Luc Godard, France / Italy 1967, 103 min., French with English subtitles, 18

A bickering, scheming, bourgeois couple leave Paris for the French countryside to claim an inheritance by nefarious means. Almost immediately, they become entangled in a cataclysmic traffic jam, which is just the beginning of a journey fraught with violent and dangerous encounters.

A bracingly funny, fire and brimstone evisceration of contemporary society, all-consuming ideologies, and rampant consumerism. At turns philosophic and slapstick, Weekend is rich with historical and literary references, as the end of the world is followed by a declaration from Godard himself that this is also...the end of cinema.
