Greeted with great acclaim following its 2019 premiere at the Berlinale, the fifth feature from American filmmaker and critic Dan Sallitt is a beautifully realised portrait of the fractures and faultlines that develop in the friendship between two young New Yorkers – one sensible, the other with a self-destructive streak.
Fourteen finds Sallitt using the same filmmaking approach as in his previous films – a tiny crew, a small-scale production process, a micro-budget – but these challenges become assets that allow intimacy and truthfulness to develop in a powerful depiction of young people in contemporary New York City.
