Lisbon-based musician and artist João Polido offers a survey of music inspired by the films of António Reis and Margarida Cordeiro – including music taken from the soundtracks and sounds informed by the films themselves. This session is part of Into Their Labours: The Films of António Reis and Margarida Cordeiro, the ICA’s comprehensive survey of the works of these two hugely influential Portuguese filmmakers.

João Polido’s work considers questions of language, cultural memory and the intersections between the histories of music and politics. His research has focused on Portuguese cultural politics under the dictatorial fascist regime of Estado Novo, which ruled the country from 1933 to 1974 – how it changed the nation, and how these changes were then re-narrated through stages of production of cultural memory.

Tonight's listening session will explore issues of tradition and national identity – informed by the likes of Michel Giacometti, a French ethnomusicologist who made a hugely important series of field recordings in Portugal during the 1960s and ’70s, and Portuguese composer Fernando Lopes-Graça, whose work was informed by both traditional and popular music.
