Deus e o Diabo na Terra do Sol, also known as Black God, White Devil, is an iconic Brazilian Revisionist Western film by Glauber Rocha. After murdering the ranch owner he worked for, the ranch hand Manoel goes on the run with his wife Rosa. Outlawed in the hinterlands, they join a self-proclaimed mystic who preaches revolt against rich landowners. Fusing mysticism, folklore and revolution, this film has been celebrated for its examination of morality, religion, and ideological fanaticism.

‘Cinema Novo and Glauber Rocha are foundations of Brazilian art history and mark a true invention of method. Although there are other cinematic dogmas of the ‘90s that have impacted the European and world scene, Cinema Novista filmmakers of ‘60s Brazil already offered a character of experimentation and freedom little known. I don’t mean this as a narrative dispute, but more to point out the strongly experimental character of non-European filmmaking and how much of their work has not yet reached wider audiences.’ - Laura Lima
