Bergman: A Year in a Life

Bergman: A Year in a Life, Dir. Jane Magnusson, Sweden 2018, 117 min., Swedish with English subtitles

1957 was the year that Ingmar Bergman shot and released Wild Strawberries, after shooting The Seventh Seal the summer before. It was also the year that Bergman directed four plays, while somehow managing the romantic responsibilities of his many simultaneous relationships. This prolific year is the focus of Jane Magnusson’s revealing study of the mercurial, conflicted and domineering master of cinema. Through a wealth of previously unseen archival material, contemporary interviews and a selection of clips from Bergman’s unparalleled body of work, Magnusson creates a trenchant and psychoanalytical portrait of the artist.
