Greeted with acclaim at its premiere during the Directors’ Fortnight at Cannes in 2021, Haider Rashid’s edgy, gripping and thought-provoking thriller tracks a lone migrant as he tries to elude border patrols and armed mercenaries to cross into Europe.
Kamal (Adam Ali) is a young Iraqi man who has fled an uncertain future in his home country – and who now finds himself at the Turkish–Bulgarian border, the frontier into the promised land of Europe. To reach it, though, he must elude law enforcement at the border – and, more treacherously, he must also dodge the ruthless local mercenaries who effectively rule these lawless hinterlands, ‘migrant hunters’ who stop at nothing to catch and kill their prey. Rashid’s breathless direction ratchets up the tension as Kamal tries to find a route out from the border forest towards a safer future.
