ICA is closed from the 30 May – 3 June inclusive.
The latest feature from the brilliant François Ozon (Summer of 85, Frantz, In the House) is a graceful and yet unsentimental film about one of the last great cinematic taboos – assisted dying. Beautifully measured and unbearably poignant, Everything Went Fine is a candid study of complicated family ties and the realities of what it means to choose to say goodbye.
When a stroke leaves him paralysed in one arm, 85-year-old André (André Dussolier) demands that his eldest daughter Emmanuèle (Sophie Marceau) helps him to die. With the grudging support of her younger sister Pascale (Géraldine Pailhas), Emmanuèle begins sorting through the complex processes necessary to fulfil her father’s unorthodox request, as André himself wonders whether it’ll be worth the money. Aided by note-perfect performances, Ozon carefully shapes a tender yet suitably unsparing feature.
