A fascination with religious painting led a teenage Oksana Shachko to consider entering a convent. But as Alain Margot’s enthralling 2014 film reveals, religion was ultimately trumped by radical feminism, as Shachko rejected the church to co-found one of the most influential and notorious protest groups of the 21st century.
I Am FEMEN traces the origins, successes and controversies of the movement Shachko co-established in 2008 to fight against sexism, sexual exploitation and the Catholic church – and to fight for women’s rights within and beyond her native Ukraine. Margot’s film captures the essence of this fascinating and bewitching individual while also telling the stories of some of the women who fought alongside her for freedom of speech and democracy.
