Identities: Catalan Cinema Now!
Institute of Contemporary Arts
Saturday 28 & Sunday 29 May 2022

The final weekend of Catalan Cinema Now! looks at the identities represented in recent Catalan cinema – of tourist towns, LGBTQ+ communities and cross-cultural writers.

Sanmao: The Desert Bride (Sanmao: La novia del desierto) is a bibliography of the cult Taiwanese writer Echo Chen Ping, known by her pen name of Sanmao, and offers a mode of examining the intercultural intersections that shaped Sanmao’s publications. In Sediments (Sedimentos), a group of trans women from Barcelona take a road trip to León where kinship prevails and new futures are forged. In the weekend’s final film Magaluf Ghost Town, tourism and the economy in the Balearic Islands offer a way of looking at intersecting lives in a town where many resort towns coexist.
