Leto, dir. Kirill Serebrennikov, Russia / France 2018, 128 min., Russian with English subtitles

Russian director Kirill Serebrennikov (The Student) charts the rise to fame of Soviet rock pioneer Viktor Tsoi (Teo Yoo) in Leto, a freewheeling snapshot of youthful rebellion in the underground scene of 1980s Leningrad. Set to a soundtrack of classics from David Bowie to The Sex Pistols, and filmed in black and white, Leto provides a wistful but timely critique of Russian state censorship of the arts.
