Licorice Pizza, dir. Paul Thomas Anderson, USA 2021, 133 min., English

Writer-director Paul Thomas Anderson casts his gaze over 1970s Los Angeles and an unlikely romance-of-sorts in this hugely acclaimed feature – his first in four years.

It’s 1973 in the San Fernando Valley, and twenty-something photographer’s assistant Alana (Alana Haim of the band Haim, her first film role) finds herself unexpectedly tickled when she’s chatted up by Gary (Cooper Hoffman, son of Philip Seymour), a cocky 15-year-old schoolboy and child actor. What follows has elements of a coming-of-age tale, a period drama and a love story, and yet it’s something altogether richer.

With cameos from Bradley Cooper, Sean Penn, Benny Safdie and Tom Waits, plus a dazzling score from Jonny Greenwood, this is another masterful feature from one of Hollywood’s most reliably brilliant directors.
