Mahamat-Saleh Haroun (A Screaming Man, A Season in France) returns to his native Chad for this hugely powerful testament to family ties, community bonds and female solidarity. Gorgeously shot and superbly acted, Lingui, the Sacred Bonds explores themes of abortion access and social opposition with uncompromising empathy.
A single mother living a precarious existence on the outskirts of Chad’s capital N’Djamena, Amina (Achouackh Abakar Souleyman) works hard to make a life for herself and her 15-year-old daughter Maria (Rihane Khalil Alio). But the pair’s worlds are turned upside down when Maria is kicked out of school for falling pregnant. Maria insists she wants an abortion, which goes against both religion and the law – leaving Amina to help her navigate a treacherous path towards a difficult future.
