Looking for Venera
Institute of Contemporary Arts
Looking for Venera, dir. Norika Sefa, Kosovo / Macedonia 2021, 111 min., Albanian with English subtitles

The Summer Exclusives series begins with the hugely acclaimed debut feature from Kosovan writer-director Norika Sefa – an intimate coming-of-age story that can only be seen in the UK in the ICA Cinema.

Venera (Kosovare Krasniqi) lives a small, insular life – either stuck at home with three generations of her family under one roof, or out and about in the kind of small town where everyone knows everybody else. But when the teenager connects with Dorina (Rozafa Celaj) – outgoing, rebellious, liberated, everything Venera is not – another world seems possible, free of the family traditions and ties that bind. Excellent naturalistic performances from the two leads help Sefa shape this tender feature, a convincing and compelling portrayal of two girls fighting against a society set on containing them.
