Celluloid Sunday
Released in 1997, the year of Hong Kong’s handover, Made in Hong Kong by Fruit Chan soon garnered critical praise for its raw and unflinching portrayal of urban disillusionment and youthful hopelessness. The film follows a small-time triad member trapped in a cycle of violence, with no apparent way out. After witnessing the suicide of a young girl, he and his friends set out to deliver two letters she had with her when she died. Made on a minimal budget, using non-professional actors and discarded film stock, the film has since become a touchstone of Hong Kong cinema, its themes of alienation and social decay still resonating today.
The film is presented on a 35mm print from the ICA Archives.
