Mekong Hotel, dir. Apichatpong Weerasethakul, Thailand 2012, 61 min., Thai with English subtitles

Chosen by director Apichatpong Weerasethakul for his specially curated 3+3 season at the ICA, Mekong Hotel is a typically unique creation – a confluence of fiction and documentary that seeks to capture the essence of a rural riverside hotel in north-east Thailand.

The hotel at the centre of this rarely-seen film sits on the Mekong River, which marks the border between Thailand and Laos, and is where Apichatpong had previously rehearsed with his crew for a movie called Ecstasy Garden he had written years earlier. Shuffling between different realms as it expresses the bonds between a vampire-like mother and her daughter, and between the young lovers and the river, Mekong Hotel was shot at the time of the heavy flooding in Thailand – and also weaves politics, destruction and a drifting dream of the future into its compellingly elusive narrative.
