On the Beach at Night Alone
Institute of Contemporary Arts
On the Beach at Night Alone (밤의 해변에서 혼자), dir. Hong Sangsoo, South Korea 2017, Korean with English subtitles, 101 min.

Book tickets

With an incredibly raw and vulnerable performance from Kim Minhee at its center, Hong Sangsoo embraces emotional directness in this quietly devastating tale of an actress reeling from an affair with a married director.

Another chapter in one of the most dynamic collaborations between director and performer in contemporary cinema, On the Beach at Night Alone combines Hong's penchant for ellipses and dreams with a raw and personal exploration of his real-life affair with Kim, which stirred up a media frenzy in Korea in 2016.
