Arthur Harari (Dark Diamond) tells one of the most extraordinary stories of the Second World War: the true tale of a Japanese soldier who – through stubbornness, pride and patriotism – refused to surrender for nearly 30 years after the fighting had stopped.
Japan, 1944, and the dying days of the war. A 22-year-old Japanese soldier named Hiroo Onoda (Yûya Endô) is sent to Lubang, a small island in the Philippines, and ordered to fight back against an expected Allied invasion. The young man trains a handful of soldiers on the twin principles of no suicide, no surrender – and so when the Japanese wave the white flag, Onoda keeps fighting from his jungle base… for three decades. Harari retells this strange tale in slow-burning but gripping fashion, aided by a compelling central performance.
