ICA is closed from the 30 May – 3 June inclusive.
Recently screened in abbreviated form on BBC Four, Marcus Werner Hed and Dan Fox’s overdue documentary now arrives at the ICA in its full feature-length edit – telling the story of one of the most uncompromising, original, and important groups of the last 50 years.
COUM Transmissions exploded out of Hull in the early 1970s into a country that was in no way ready for them. Fusing confrontational performance art with fierce industrial music (which they essentially invented), Genesis P-Orridge, Cosey Fanni Tutti and their cohort scandalised a nation in the ’70s – and never more so than at their seminal 1976 ICA exhibition Prostitution, a still-controversial landmark moment in post-war British art.
Some 45 years on, COUM Transmissions and Throbbing Gristle remain as vital as ever – and using both original interviews and rare archive footage, Hed and Fox have at last told their singular story.
Other, Like Me screens exclusively at the ICA.
