Afternoon Clouds, dir. Payal Kapadia, India 2017, 13min.
In a Bombay apartment, seventy-year-old widow Kati and her Nepali maid Mati cook together, talking while watching a flower that blooms for just two days. Mati asks, "Why don’t you grow a flower that blossoms through the year?" As they move through their quiet routine, reality and dream intermingle – Mati encounters a man from her past, while Kati dreams of her late husband. The film captures fleeting moments of memory, longing, and the transience of life in a serene yet wistful atmosphere.
And What is the Summer Saying, dir. Payal Kapadia, India 2018, 23min.
Unseen voices drift over black-and-white images of a village on the edge of a forest. Namdeo, searching for honey, watches the treetops as women whisper secrets of lost loves. A strange smoke rises, like a dream from another time. Payal Kapadia’s third short film continues her exploration of memory, nature, and sound.
