Relaxed screening: Kinds of Kindness
Institute of Contemporary Arts

Access Document

Our next Relaxed Screening, with host Ethan Lyon, will be Yorgos Lanthimos’ Kinds of Kindness

The screening is for people who want to enjoy the cinema experience but find the noise and lack of light overwhelming. To help this, the house lights will be on at a low level and the volume will be slightly reduced from normal, there will also be a quiet space provided if you feel distressed and need to leave the screening.

After the screening, there will be a discussion in the Studio where you can talk about your responses to the film and your experiences with autism and disability in a safe space.

We value your feedback, to use for future screenings, with the hope that we will run monthly relaxed screenings going forward. We'd love if you could share your thoughts with us at access@ica.art and let us know if you'd like to see more accessible events like this.

This is what our screen looks like in a relaxed setting:

Ethan, our host, has been helping run Relaxed Screenings with the BFI since 2022 and has seen how a core audience for these events has grown and flourished. As a disabled person himself, he wants to be able to go to films and talk about how they made him feel with his friends. Ethan’s thesis was about how he understood films autistically. Relaxed Screenings provide that space for people to learn about films, about themselves and about others, to connect and feel safe in their difference. It’s our desire that this event will be the first of many of those opportunities here at the ICA.
Kinds of Kindness, dir. Yorgos Lanthimos
USA / Ireland / Uk 2024, 164 min.

The latest film from Yorgos Lanthimos is a triptych fable, following a man without choice who tries to take control of his own life; a policeman who is alarmed that his wife who was missing-at-sea has returned and seems a different person; and a woman determined to find a specific someone with a special ability, who is destined to become a prodigious spiritual leader.
