ICA is closed from the 30 May – 3 June inclusive.
Winner of a special commendation in the First Feature Competition at the BFI London Film Festival last autumn, when it screened at the ICA, Laura Samani’s fiercely original debut makes a welcome return to The Mall for an extended run.
North-eastern Italy, the dawn of the 20th century. Agata (Celeste Cescutti), a young woman, gives birth to a stillborn baby – which, under strict Catholic doctrine, condemns the child to eternal Limbo. When Agata hears rumours of a sanctuary that could save the soul of her child, she leaves behind her family and takes a solitary trek into the mountains – a journey fraught with uncertainty and danger. At once haunting and haunted, distressing and magical, this is a hugely assured first feature from a unique new voice in European cinema.
