The Day He Arrives
Institute of Contemporary Arts
The Day He Arrives (북촌 방향), dir. Hong Sangsoo, South Korea 2011, Korean with English subtitles, 79 min.

'I don't remember a thing.'

A former film director, Seongjun arrives in Seoul to meet a close friend, and quickly finds himself drifting from snowy streets to dimly lit bars in a seemingly inescapable loop of reconnections, drunken dialogues and romantic entanglements.

One of Hong's most structurally indefinable films, The Day He Arrives is an expertly constructed hall of mirrors with each new interaction Seongjun partakes in, seeming to call into question everything we've already seen.
