Displaced from their hometown in northern Mexico by apparently unending violence, Paloma (Paloma Petra) and Lobo (Armando Hernández) try to survive in unfamiliar territory with little more than their love for one another. But while Paloma wants to head back home, Lobo’s brutal memories deter him from ever wanting to return. The spellbinding formal confidence of Carlos Lenin’s first feature doesn’t distract from the fact that this is, first and foremost, a film about love.
The Dove and the Wolf is dark and bitter in places, certainly, but it burns with an inner fire and comes wrapped in a rare tenderness, and heralds the arrival of a singular new voice in Latin American cinema.
