Titane
Institute of Contemporary Arts
Titane, dir. Julia Ducournau, France 2021, 108 min., French with English subtitles, 18

Tracking a murderous young woman on the run, Julia Ducournau’s second film is a Technicolor fever dream – and the winner of the Palme d’Or at this year’s Cannes Film Festival.

Alexia (Agathe Rousselle) is a young woman whose adulthood has been shaped by a childhood tragedy. Badly injured when her careless father crashed the car in which they were travelling, she now has a troublingly intense relationship with motor vehicles and makes her living as a dancer at car shows. When one fan tries to get too close to her, Alexia takes violent revenge and then goes on the run, disguised as a boy.

Proudly provocative and uncompromisingly extreme, Titane is a futuristic and twisted love story of sorts – a real one-of-a-kind film from one of cinema’s most original new voices.
