In the small, largely abandoned town of Puebla de la Reina in Extremadura, a group of women in their 50s and 60s speak about their lived experiences. ‘I’m fucking sick of this girdle’ one states early on, setting up a tension between expectations and desire that haunts the fabric of this imaginative film. The fixed camera studies their faces; their faith emerges as they visit the church or spend time in small groups where class is a factor. Some are defined by their position in relation to the men in their lives, present or absent – a widow, a wife, a daughter.
Time spent with these women offers a compelling insight into a world where things are rarely what they seem with a sense of intimacy captured by Rodríguez’s incisive approach. This may be a town that time forgot but Mighty Flash captures a strong sense of place, a telling frustration and a sense of anticipation – waiting perhaps for a Godot that will never come. An audacious, ambitious film unafraid to take the viewer on a journey through the emotional lives of these remarkable women.
This London premiere will be followed by a Q&A with the film’s director Ainhoa Rodríguez and co-producer Luis Miñarro.
