ICA is closed from the 30 May – 3 June inclusive.
Winner of the Palme d’Or at Cannes in 2010, and screening here as part of the 3+3 season exclusively curated for the ICA by its director, Apichatpong Weerasethakul’s dreamlike feature is a journey like few others in recent cinema history – a magical realist evocation of a world and a state of mind that exists only in the imagination of its creator.
Suffering from acute kidney failure, Uncle Boonmee (Thanapat Saisaymar) has chosen to spend his final days in the countryside, surrounded by his loved ones – which, unexpectedly, include his long-lost son (Jeerasak Kulhong), who returns home in non-human form, and the ghost of his late wife (Natthakarn Aphaiwong). Contemplating the reasons for his illness, Boonmee treks through the jungle with his family to a mysterious hilltop cave – the birthplace of his first life.
The film is showing from a 35mm print.
