This hands-on workshop delves into the fascinating intersection of robotics and music, with ICA’s recent artists-in-residence Speakers Corner Quartet. Participants will engage with the key themes of human-machine interaction central to Geumhyung Jeong’s current exhibition, Under Construction while discovering how SCQ reshapes traditional musical compositions and performances using technology and innovative programming.

All materials will be provided, and the ticket includes a visit to the exhibition. We encourage people of all ages, however the minimum age of participants for this workshop is 10, and children must be accompanied by an adult.

Speakers Corner Quartet is a band that stands as a testament to friendship, love and the power of music. What started off as a house band in 2006 for legendary open mic night in Brixton Jamm is now a four-piece powerhouse consisting of flautist Biscuit, drummer and percussionist Kwake Bass, violinist Raven Bush, and bassist Peter Bennie. Making music together for more than two decades, they have been the bedrock of the musical community, passing on the baton and continuing the legacies of previous generations of South London greats. Their support for artists and influence is far-reaching; collaborating with the likes of Sampha, Kae Tempest, Tirzah and Shabaka Hutchings and developing the next wave of young talent such as Joe Armon-Jones.

With their debut 2023 album ‘Furthur Out Than The Edge’ gaining critical acclaim, 2024 has been a momentous year so far. The band has since won an Ivor Novello Award for their single ‘Geronimo Blues’ featuring Kae Tempest, performed a sold-out Barbican show paying tribute to legendary Arthur Russell and playing all new compositions with a 35-piece orchestra for Chaka Khan’s Meltdown Festival. Speakers Corner Quartet’s improvisational style and innovative approach to composition have defined them as a multifaceted band. Allowing them to play music with unfeigned freedom and honesty, ever-evolving but with a sound that is distinctively their own.
