Over The Hill and Far Away
Costume, Ritual and Rural Mysticism
Institute of Contemporary Arts
On Volya, dir. Ayla Olya Dmyterko

Deep within a foggy wood or out in a verdant green field; the countryside holds magic, history and fantastical visions, as this selection of shorts reveals. Eerie cries ring out across the hills as fires rage in unsettling visions. Costume and time-honoured folk traditions pay homage to Georgian filmmaker Sergei Parajanov and Alice-style playfulness abounds in an English country garden. For fans of the Wicker Man, Pentangle and Kate Bush, join us on a journey into wyrd and hidden realms beyond what human eyes can see.

The programme includes new work from Poggi & Vinel (Jessica Forever) and Ukrainian-Canadian artist Ayla Dmyterko, whose visual practice investigates histories of possession and dispossession. Finn Darrell’s playful Muntjac displays their myriad practices involving performance art, filmmaking and photography, exploring mystical beliefs, the body, gender, human sexuality and perversion.
