A phone call brings Thomas to a hospital, where he finds his wife Carla in tears. As the circumstances of her accident come into focus, so too does a relationship whose familiar terms suddenly seem uncertain.

From this deceptively simple premise, Angela Schanelec constructs a relationship drama that resists the conventions of the genre in favour of something decidedly more elliptical. As conversations circle what remains unspoken; gestures and silences come increasingly to the fore with a spellbinding intensity. My Wife Cries is at once formally audacious and acutely attentive to the emotional lives of its characters and how quickly intimacy can give way to estrangement.
