The Catch
Institute of Contemporary Arts
The Catch (飼育), dir. Nagisa Ōshima, Japan 1961, Japanese with English subtitles, 105 min.

During the final days of World War II, a remote village community is shaken by the capture of an African-American pilot. As they figure out what to do with him, tensions flare between the village headman and other inhabitants, bringing long-repressed resentments to the surface.

Made on the heels of his angry break with Shochiku over their unyielding suppression of Night and Fog in Japan, Ōshima delivers a categorical rejection of the humanistic interpretations of the war prevalent in postwar Japanese cinema.
