After surviving Auschwitz, a former cabaret singer (Nina Hoss, in a dazzling performance) returns to her war-ravaged hometown to seek out her husband, who may or may not have betrayed her to the Nazis. With Phoenix, Petzold crafts a complex and fractured mystery of identity and deceit that continues his exploration of the tensions between reality and artifice to devastating effect.
