Bios
Em Colquhoun is a writer and photographer from Hull, UK. Best known for writing about the late Mark Fisher, she is currently commissioning editor at the Canary, and blogs at xenogothic.com.
Ann Pettifor is an international political economist best known for predicting the Global Financial Crisis of 2007-9 with her book, The Coming First World Debt Crisis (Palgrave, 2006). She is the author of The Global Casino (Verso), The Case for the Green New Deal (2019) and The Production of Money ((2017). She is a member of the Scottish government’s Just Transition Commission. Her book, The Global Casino: How Wall St Gambles with People and the Planet sets out to turn readers’ attention to the invisible, but powerful global financial system. She argues that the activities of speculators within the system remain largely hidden but are hugely impactful on both our ecosystem and our cost-of-living: the prices of our daily bread, pensions, energy and housing.
Hilary Powell and Dan Edelstyn work across art, film and social enterprise to make contagious visions and stories of change. Their first feature documentary film ‘How To Re-Establish A Vodka Empire’ (2011) involved a journey into Ukrainian family history that led to the setting up of a social enterprise vodka brand (Zorokovich 1917) and the beginnings of their fusion of storytelling and social impact. It was commissioned by Channel 4 and premiered at the BFI London Film Festival. ‘Bank Job’ - their second feature documentary similarly expanded beyond the screen and involved setting up a ‘rebel bank’printing money and exploding 1.2Million of debt. The film was supported by the BFI Doc Society’s Documentary Fund and premiered at HotDocs 2021 and artefacts produced alongside the film include a book and artworks now in the collections of theV&A and British Museum. The POWER STATION feature documentary film sees their collaborative work develop further in its ambition and has involved innovation in community and audience building strategies to achieve its goals. POWER STATION had its UK premiere at Sheffield DocFest 2025 and is currently being shown in cinemas and community settings across the UK and beyond.
This event is part of the public programme of Genuine Fake Premium Economy: Jenna Bliss, Buck Ellison and Jasmine Gregory.
