Laura Lima: The Drawing Drawing
Um Filme para Ehuana
dir. Louis Botkay, Brazil 2018, 28 min.
At the heart of this film is Ehuana, a prominent leader, artist and teacher from the Yanomami community, an indigenous group living in the Amazon rainforest on the border of Brazil and Venezuela.
‘In Um Filme para Ehuana (A Film for Ehuana) by Louise Botkay, we see the director’s delicate encounter with Ehuana, a small gesture about the immense importance of the native people of Brazil.’ - Laura Lima
O Túmulo da Terra
dir. Yhuri Cruz, Brazil 2021, 11 min.
Based on his own poem of the same name, director Yhuri Cruz tells the story of the origin of ‘Pretusi’, a stone mask. The mask acts as a character in the Black expressionist fable which unfolds as a faceless man encounters his own subjectivity.
‘O Túmulo da Terra (Tomb of the Earth) is an elegant and brilliant visual play by the multi-faceted artist Yhuri Cruz, which touches on the strength and tragedy of the history of Black people in Brazil.’ - Laura Lima
Limite
dir. Mário Peixoto, Brazil 1931, 120 min
Considered one of the earliest experimental feature films, Limite (meaning ‘limit’ or edge’) is the only feature by Mário Peixoto. Inspired by a haunting André Kertész photograph on the cover of a magazine, this silent film tells the story of a man and two women lost at sea. Adrift, their messy pasts unfold through a series of flashbacks.
‘Presented here as a cinematic jewel, is Limite, a film made in the historical context of ‘30s Brazil by Mário Peixoto. Brazilian modernism is a political and aesthetic landmark; a benchmark for the conceptual nuances that still appear in the work of artists from across Brazil today.’ - Laura Lima
