A young black mother stands outside her car in a neighbourhood street of New York city
A Thousand and One, dir. A.V. Rockwell, USA 2023, 117 min., English, 15

A.V. Rockwell’s directorial debut follows unapologetic and free-spirited Inez (Teyana Taylor), who kidnaps her six-year-old son Terry from the foster care system. Holding onto their secret and each other, mother and son set out to reclaim their sense of home, identity and stability in a rapidly gentrifying New York City of the 90s.

Winner of the Grand Jury Prize at Sundance, A.V. Rockwell’s heartfelt drama gives a heartfelt depiction of motherhood.
