The debut feature from filmmakers David Siegel and Scott McGehee, Suture (1993) is a neo-noir thriller about two long-lost brothers whose identities become entangled.
Sharing an apparently striking ‘physical resemblance’, half-brothers Clay and Vincent meet at the funeral of their wealthy father, whose murder has been tied to Vincent. Hatching a plot to kill his brother and steal his identity, Vincent’s attempt at assassination fails, leaving Clay disfigured and suffering from severe amnesia. After his face is surgically reconstructed to look identical to Vincent’s, Clay finds his sense of self dissolving as he inadvertently steps into a life that was never his own.
With the two leads played by a Black and White actor respectively, Suture offers a complex meditation on themes around racial identity.
Produced by Steven Soderbergh, Suture went on to become a hit on the festival circuit, including Sundance where it won the award for Best Cinematography.
