In Focus: El Pampero Cine
Institute of Contemporary Arts
27 July - 2 August 2025

Formed by Laura Citarella, Mariano Llinás, Agustín Mendilaharzu, and Alejo Moguillansky, Argentine film collective El Pampero Cine has over the course of 23 years produced a quite astounding body of work, one characterised by its singular originality and its unwavering independence.

'For the last twenty years, El Pampero Cine has experimented with and realized works with malleable systems of production, which adapt to the needs and objectives of each film. We believe that, in order for a film to reach a particular final form, there has to be production aesthetics and politics that go with it.' – Laura Citarella

This approach to filmmaking and the numerous works it has produced, in particular La Flor and Trenque Lauquen, have garnered widespread international acclaim both at major film festivals and beyond, but in the UK the scope of the collectives work has sadly remained largely hidden.

With two films each from Laura Citarella, Mariano Llinás and Alejo Moguillansky, many of which Agustín Mendilaharzu photographed or played a major role in, this programme, for the most part, does not spotlight Pampero's celebrated works but rather turns to their more unconventional and overlooked creations.

Off-shoots, recreations, elaborations, and of course labyrinths. In this trio of pairs, golden threads of music and mystery emerge, from the myriad lives of a Schubert sonata, or a debate over the lyrics of a famous singer and the histories they unravel, to the mysterious and endlessly interpretable activities of a hotels guests. The works of El Pampero Cine are filled with repetitions and recreations, dialogues and debates and of course music and mystery. A fitting pair for a collective who has, over the past twenty years, described themselves as both a family and a band.

As a part of this special programme of six films, we are delighted to welcome Laura Citarella to the ICA for an in-depth conversation following the screening of her debut film Ostende, which opens the programme.
