A shocking discovery is made when the dead bodies of an elderly man and his care centre’s director are found early one morning. Shiba Munenori (Matsuyama Kenichi), a dedicated caregiver responsible for the elderly man’s care, becomes the prime suspect. Meanwhile, a distressing pattern emerges: over 40 deaths have occurred since he began working at the care centre.
Prosecutor Otomo Hidemi (Nagasawa Masami) relentlessly pursues Shiba. While Shiba admits to taking the lives of the elderly people, he insists that it was not murder but salvation. A question arises: why did he take the lives of elderly individuals, and what is the true intent behind his notion of salvation?
With Japan’s growing elderly population, caregiving-related incidents are on the rise. Directed by Maeda Tetsu, known for A Banana? At This Time of Night? (2018), which was screened as part of the Japan Foundation Touring Film Programme 2020, this novel adaptation engages with one of Japan’s most troubling issues in its aging society, the breakdown of the care system and the emotions of people involved, presented in the form of a gripping mystery drama.
