Joachim Trier’s Oslo Trilogy draws to a conclusion this month with The Worst Person in the World. To celebrate its release, we’re screening the first two episodes in the trilogy alongside it – including this dazzling debut feature, a tale of two young wannabe writers whose lives spin off in dramatically different directions.
Erik (Espen Klouman Høiner) and Phillip (Anders Danielsen Lie), best friends in their early twenties, are trying to carve out careers as novelists. Erik’s manuscript fails to find favour with publishers – but after Phillip’s first novel makes him an instant literary superstar, he falls prey to a breakdown that reshapes both their lives. At once a compelling character study and a reflection on the nature of youth, Reprise made Trier’s name on its 2006 release – and set the tone for one of modern cinema’s finest trilogies.
