Spectres: The Cinema of Jacques Rivette

Directed by Rivette as a part of André S. Labarthe and André Bazin's seminal series Cinéastes de Notre Temps, this three part documentary paints an arresting portrait of a singular artist and proved profoundly impactful on the direction of Rivette's subsequent work.

The documentary is split into three distinct parts, each roughly feature-length. The first part entitled La Recherche du Relatif sees Jacques Rivette interviewing Renoir at length about his career interpolated with various clips from his films. The second part La direction d'acteur centres on Renoir's work with actor Michel Simon, as the two dicuss their collaborations over lunch, while the final part La règle et l'exception, finds Renoir alone in the cinema analysing scenes from La Marseillaise and La Règle du jeu.
